If you’re an athlete who has braces, you need to care for your teeth, gums, and orthodontic hardware while you play. This is very important because if you don’t, you could break your appliance, suffer dental issues, and even experience dental emergencies. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Gary Lee Breece, recommends caring for your smile and braces while playing sports by doing the following things:

-Wear a mouthguard: A mouthguard is a strong appliance that can fit over your teeth and braces. When you’re playing sports, the mouthguard can protect your teeth and braces when hard, forceful objects hit the mouth. This can help you avoid broken braces and broken teeth.

-Avoid sports drinks: Sports drinks are loaded with sugar, which means that when you drink them, you increase your chances of developing cavities. So, instead of drinking sports drinks, drink water.

-Attend your adjustment appointments: Make sure you attend your routine adjustment appointments so we can keep you on track toward your perfect smile. These appointments are also great opportunities to treat any wear and tear on your appliance if needed.
