If you’re on a trip and you experience a broken bracket, wire, or other braces hardware, then it’s best to do all you can to improve the situation. You don’t want to worry about your braces the entire trip, do you? So, to help you, our orthodontist, Dr. Gary Lee Breece, has some tips for you.

First, adjust the hardware. If you have a broken bracket, move it back into place. Sometimes the brackets slide and shift. If you have a broken wire that is poking you, try to put the wire back into place with the eraser-end of a pencil. If this isn’t possible, put it to an area that isn’t causing pain or bothering your mouth.

Second, use orthodontic wax. When you have everything in the right position, grab your orthodontic wax and put it over the broken area. This will make the hardware smooth and no longer irritating. It will also keep the bracket in position.

Third, contact our office and schedule an appointment for when you arrive back home. Treating a broken wire or bracket isn’t too timely, so you shouldn’t worry about hurrying home and getting to our office. Instead of worrying, just call our orthodontic team, explain the situation, and schedule an appointment for when you come back to town.
